Going Out Alone

You were supposed to grow old and weary.

I would visit you each day and call you dearie

Saying you were a “caution”

And how would you manage without me.

You were supposed to watch me grow

Buy me pads to stem the flow

Tell me not to smile at boys

And the Crucial word was No.

You were supposed to ask me for rent

And borrow more when that was spent

You were supposed to buy a hat

And make a spectacle of yourself

On my wedding day.

You were supposed to be the mother-in-law from Heaven

Ganging up-and wishing you were thirty years younger.

You were supposed to ride the carousel

And sit in a giant teacup

Whirling-Whirling-Whirling.

You were supposed to sprinkle stardust

On my firstborn.

Tell me it would be easy the next time round.

You were Not supposed to go out Alone.

My Mother decided to go out alone aged 31 years
